Now, I wouldn’t suggest actually coloring your hair while driving down the road, but I think most wandering women have one thing in common. How in the world do we maintain our hair while we travel? To be honest, travel days mostly consist of messy buns and yoga pants. I’m not one to “get ready” to drive 10+ hours hauling my house. Once I’m there though I do enjoy the occasional shower and some personal upkeep.
The first 6 months that I traveled I went home so much I didn’t have to worry about getting my hair done. I would schedule an appointment with someone I trusted when I was home and all was right in the world. Until we moved 17 hours away from home and I didn’t see Oklahoma (or my stylist) for months. I wasn’t prepared. At this time, I was still highlighting my hair. You know, the kind of hair color that requires regular appointments. I was desperate. I found a local salon that used Redken color (cause my hair loves it) and made an appointment. It wasn’t horrible, but I wasn’t sold.About a year into my travel I needed another reboot. It was the day before my birthday and I had made an appointment at the most expensive place in town hoping my results would be perfect. WRONG!! Y’all, she nearly colored my hair black, with highlights that she didn’t tone. My hair needs a toner. It was horrible. It took a year to get it to a color that I enjoyed. So that was it. Done. I wasn’t getting my hair colored unless I was home and could go to someone I trusted. That has been my gig for the last two years. I haven’t be able to play with color. I’ve had to stick to a base color that almost matches my natural. Lame. No fun. I used to change color in my hair every other month.
I haven’t found the solution to changing my hair color all the time, but I have found a happy medium I am ecstatic about. I found a online salon that ships color to wherever you are. I am not a stylist and don’t claim to know much about color theory, but this process was pretty effortless and gave me results I am happy with. I can get a fresh color whenever I want or need a pick me up. I have done this twice now and after the second chat with a color consultant I found a color I love. It is “customizable” and you can chat with them on the phone or online to get a color that will work for you. The application process is easy to follow and only took me about an hour with long hair. Yes, please!
RESULTS & FINAL THOUGHTS
It is great. Wonderful. And I think I’ll do it for as long as we travel. I’m not giving up hair salons and I don’t think you should either. A good stylist is priceless and if I could fly my favorite one to me every 8 weeks I would. No lie. I don’t like doing this myself, but I can’t trust them all. I tried that. So, if you are like me and have struggled with maintaining your color on the road I hope this gives you an option. This is specifically for root touch up and all over color. They said they will eventually come out with lightening products, but they have none available at this time. Honestly, I would suggest getting your hair professional lightened if that is something you are looking for. Since this video, I gave myself an ombre and it wasn’t easy or good for my hair. Go to a professional. I’ve continued to research other online salons and look forward to trying some different brands to see which ones I like best. This product worked better for me than box color from the drug store and wasn’t much more expensive. I felt like I was taking care of my hair… until I lightened it myself, but we aren’t talking about that. I suggest playing it safe with the color (especially darkness) and going for semi permanent color the first time. As I mentioned in the video, I played it safe on the level (darkness) and glad I did. It is easier to go darker, but darker to reverse. I will probably continue to use the semi permanent to be honest. It is easier on your hair and last long enough on me.
HERE is my friend code for esalon. If you try it and use this link it would give me a couple extra bucks towards my next color. I’ve also been interested in trying a couple of the styling products. I will keep you updated on if they are worth it or not.
